The Organization

How is the Organization involved with the community?

This project is a non-profit, volunteer-run Day Care Center created for children who would otherwise be on the streets shining shoes or begging. It was first set up by local mothers to provide a childcare center to care for small children from low-income families, whose parents often have to work full-time and thus cannot take care of their children during the day. Some of these children come from abusive and/or very impoverished homes, and some have been left at home unattended due to parents working full-time. The center, as an alternative to leaving the children at home unattended for long hours, offers a safe environment for kids while providing them with an education.

Background to the project and its aims

The Center needs volunteers willing to look after, teach, and give these children all the love and support they need and sometimes are lacking at home. The loving and open environment of the nursery counters the familial problems and other socio-economic problems many of these children face at home. Childcare facilities are often unavailable or unaffordable, forcing parents to have to leave their children home alone for long periods of time.

The activities taken on by the volunteers improve the skills of the teachers in the Centers by suggesting new teaching methods, building ties with the families, and making the family a strong source of motivation to gaurantee the children a brighter future.

What are the daily volunteer activities in the project?

As a volunteer, you will support the teachers in the Centers. The children are divided into age groups, and each volunteer will be assigned to a group of children. The activities the teachers plan each week vary depending on the age group of the children with which you are working. There are also some general activities that are the same across groups, such as preparing meals and cleaning up the children.

Generally, main volunteer activities relate to the following responsibilities:

  • Care for children between the ages of 1 and 6 years
  • Work with younger children through early stimulation exercises to promote motor skills, interaction and communication skills, and child development.
  • Teach children new songs and dances
  • Teach basic math, counting, and English to children in the nursery
  • Plan educational activities for the children, customized for the volunteer’s age group.
  • Help prepare meals to ensure children receive a balanced diet
  • Supervise children during meals and cleaning times (to promote good personal hygiene)
  • Organize recreational activities (music, singing. arts and crafts, etc) for the children
