The Organization

How is the Organization involved with the community?

The mission of organization is to generate awareness and volunteer support of the current social issues facing Chiang Mai, Thailand. The project is a community learning center focused on teaching Thai and English languages and the arts to Burmese refugees, who fled Burma to escape severe human rights violations. Basic education is unavailable to most ordinary Burmese citizens, which makes their services extremely valuable to these people. The Organization also has a vegetarian cafe with a small shop to help generate income for the learning center.

Why does the project need volunteers and what are the daily volunteer activities in the project?

While Thailand often serves as a safe asylum from the dangerous and corrupt military junta in Burma, discrimination and exploitation from employers and others in Thailand continues to be a problem. In this program, volunteers will be working towards the empowerment and education of these minority groups to further their chances of fair employment and a better quality of life.

This project requires English speakers to teach weekly classes held at center. Volunteers may have the opportunity to work in the Café as well, by assisting with operations and the income-generating shop.

Daily activities include:

  • Planning and implementing English classes
  • General administrative tasks
