The Organization

How is the Organization involved with the community?

The project was founded to stop the suffering of the homeless, abused, and injured stray animals in the community. In less than 10 years, the clinic has treated and sterilized over 7,000 animals, successfully making a visible difference in the area and surrounding islands.

As a one-of-a-kind clinic in the area, they perform surgery and treat sick animals in a controlled environment, go out dog-catching, have regular sterilization programs for the stray animals, and provide every animal with a free rabies vaccination.

To further community development the project also runs an animal welfare education program in schools for children ranging in ages from 5 to 10. The education project offers children information about animals and their needs– food, shelter, medical care and love. The project is committed to changing the community’s perception on stray animals, reducing the number of homeless cats and dogs, and securing a better quality of life.

What are the daily volunteer activities in this project?

Volunteer duties vary from cleaning dog kennels and cat cages (lots of poop and vomit at times!), feeding the animals, conducting weekly health checks on all the animals, doing laundry, grooming the animals, spending time with the cats and walking the dogs with plenty of time for cuddles. The shelter also brings in other local wildlife. Volunteers may encounter monkeys, turtles, and sea hawks.

Volunteers work six days a week, six hours a day, with varying shifts. One night shift is required a week due to dog noise level in the early morning. During that shift, volunteers will sleep in the kitchen area near the kennels and quiet down the dogs if they start barking, which they sometimes do to the Muslim call to prayer at 5:00 am in the morning. This is very important, because the shelter cannot risk being shut down due to complaints. Night shifts are from 7 pm- 7 am.
